Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have your Original flavor lip balm?!

Yes, we do! Thank you for asking. The fact that you even asked means you have been one of our incredibly loyal customers. We are so grateful for you. Our Original organic, Fair Trade lip balm flavor is simply our Lemongrass. When we rebranded Zambeezi last year, we chose to clarify the predominant scent and flavor profile of each of our tubes. With this, we added Lemongrass to better clarify the Original flavor for customers who had not tried it yet.

Other than the label change, the Lemongrass is the same as it always has been, keeping lips soft, soothed and happy! Please let us know if you have any further questions.

What is the Fair Trade Federation?

Proudly, an active member of the Fair Trade movement since 2007, simply put (directly from the Fair Trade Federation site):

The Fair Trade Federation (FTF) is a trade association of U.S. and Canadian fair trade businesses. FTF membership represents an entire organization, not just an individual product. This high bar of fair trade means each and every business decision is made with the well-being of artisans and farmers in mind.

Why are you Fair Trade?

When Zambeezi began, our goal wasn't to become a Fair Trade business. Our mission was simply to do business the way we believe it should be done, with people at the center. Whether our partners in Zambia or our customers here in North America, we want put people first. As our mission statement says:

We exist to enable communities to thrive by identifying and developing unrealized human potential to free people to pursue their vision of a better world.

But, what is Fair Trade? It's not simply fair wages, but an entire approach to business structured on partnerships where people are valued as people through equity, respect and communication. We love how the principles of the Fair Trade Federation articulate it:

Create Opportunities for economically and socially marginalized farmers and artisans. Fair trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development achieved through long-term trading partnerships.

Develop Transparent and Accountable Relationships with artisans and farmers to ensure that relationships are open, fair, consistent, and respectful.

Build Capacity of farmers, artisans, and their communities. FTF members invest time and resources to help producers build their businesses and create sustainable supply chains.

Promote Fair Trade by raising awareness about fair trade, educating customers and producers, and inspiring other businesses to adopt fair trade practices.

Pay Promptly and Fairly by discussing costs and pricing openly and honestly so that producers are able to earn a fair wage.

Support Safe and Empowering Working Conditions that are free of discrimination and forced labor. Healthy workplaces empower producers to participate in decision-making.

Cultivate Environmental Stewardship by encouraging responsible use of resources and eco-friendly production. FTF members reduce, reuse, reclaim, and recycle materials whenever possible.

Ensure the Rights of Children by never using exploitative child labor. FTF members support children’s right to security, education, and play and respect the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Respect the Cultural Identity of the farmers and artisans and celebrate diversity. Fair trade products and production methods respect the traditions of the local communities.

What ingredients come from your partners in Zambia?

The primary ingredients we source from our Zambian Partners: organic honey, organic beeswax, organic lemongrass oil, organic rosemary oil and organic mongongo oil. On each of our product pages you will find a whole list of ingredients.

For our lip balm, any ingredient with an asterisk is sourced from one of our partners in Zambia in full or in part. We are constantly seeking to have as many of our ingredients as possible come from Zambia. However, which ingredients we offer can fluctuate due to the season, available stock and a myriad of other reasons.

All of our soaps are handcrafted in Zambia and thus each ingredient is sourced locally or from the surrounding region.
